The Quiet Comfort of Cozy Simulation Games

June 17, 2026 · Lena Hartmann

Not every game needs a boss fight. Some evenings you just want to build a little something, watch it work, and let your brain idle. That's the whole appeal of the cozy sim genre, and mobile is the perfect home for it.

Garden of Gears nails this. You design clockwork machines, set them running, and watch your garden tend itself. Failure costs you nothing, which sounds like it should be boring but actually makes it deeply relaxing. You experiment freely because you can't lose.

The trick with cozy sims is that 'relaxing' still needs to be engaging. There has to be a next thing to build, a small itch to scratch. The weak ones run out of ideas fast and leave you watching an empty loop.

Pair one of these with a podcast and a cup of tea. It's one of the better uses of a phone I can think of.
